Inform the patient that their skin must be considered as an ‘open wound’ now and is prone to infection. Hence, they must treat it accordingly, keeping it clean and dry with a good barrier cream to prevent the possibility of infection. They must understand that they can have a seriously negative effect on their results if they scratch or pick at the site, after treatment.
Tell them to keep applying a suitable cream with a high SPF for at least 7 days.
This ‘subtle’ approach will significantly reduce the likelihood of blistering, punctate bleeding and epidermal damage.
It is very important for your patients or clients to understand the importance of hygiene and cleanliness after laser treatments. They can easily induce damage by not properly ‘looking after’ their tattoo sites, either through infections or physical trauma.
 Figure 53: A ‘Kool Pak’
These ‘Kool Paks’ are very useful to cool down the skin both before and after laser tattoo removal procedures.
These can be frozen beforehand and reused many times.
But remember - no two tattoos are the same! They differ in inks, depths, distribution, colours, scar tissue etc. The owners differ in state of health, age, condition of their skin, diet, exercise and other factors such as diabetes, whether they smoke or not. Each of these factors can have a bearing on the removal process. Hence, results can vary widely.
