Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
Various thoughts on various subjects...
In this last section we ask some questions which we hear regularly.
Can laser treatments cause cancer?
This is an important question and is often asked by laser users and patients alike. The answer is that no evidence has been found so far that suggests that cancer (any type) may be induced by these treatments.
One of Mike’s colleagues in Strathclyde University, Jenny Newstead, carried out a Ph.D. project back in the late 1980s to address this issue. Her results showed that there were no discernible changes in the DNA of cells taken from laser-irradiated sites. This suggests that laser-induced mutagenicity does not occur, even with very high laser energy pulses.
Her thesis is entitled ‘Assessment of laser/skin interactions by histologic and cytogenetic techniques’ published in 1988 and is available in the University if anyone wants to follow this up at this link.
