Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
Summary
No two tattoos are the same! They differ in inks, depths, distribution, colours, scar tissue etc. The owners differ in state of health, age, condition of their skin, diet, exercise and other factors such as diabetes, whether they smoke or not. Each of these factors can have a bearing on the removal process. Hence, results can vary widely.
For these reasons it is very difficult to advise patients on how many treatments they will require, or how long their overall treatment will take. Likewise, the time between treatment sessions will be different for different people.
Micro-scarring occurs when tattoos are put into the skin. This is a natural part of the process. Every laser treatment will also generate a certain amount of micro-scarring around the ink particles – it is inevitable!.
The laser removal process is not so much ‘laser-dependent’, as it is ‘body-dependent’. This is very much dependent on the individual, their state of health, age, physical activities and various other factors.
After all, we don't all wear the same sized shoes!!
Mythconceptions....
As with all laser treatment, laser tattoo removal has gained a number of ‘mythconceptions’. We shall list some of them here:
1. “Small spots target deeper ink better than larger spots”
2. “Green cannot be removed by X laser”
3. “Such and such a wavelength is ‘better’ than some other wavelength”
4. Picosecond lasers are ‘better’ than ‘nanosecond lasers
Many of these ‘mythconceptions’ are either completely untrue or simply inaccurate.
