Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
I had no idea how deep so I just did it so there was a little pinpoint bleeding-
dermal. I tried it out on a patient who had very little money and wanted this large
tattoo removed - I think I only had treated him once or twice without needling.
 Then once with it.
When I saw him after the last treatment the tattoo seemed to have faded better
than previously. I saw him again a year or so later and the tattoo had diminished a
lot despite only a few treatments. At the same time, I had been treating a young
girl with a multiple layered, multicolored tattoo on her wrist which did not seem
to be going as fast as we would have liked. So I needled it and it seemed to work
so much better. Indeed the ‘cracking’ sound was like gunshots.
So, I everafter incorporated needling. And now I see fractional treatments
predrilling more. I love our QX MaX it is reliable and easy to use. Sorry this was so
long winded. Hope it helps. Btw. I like reading your stuff. Thanks.
This was sent to us by Desley Sayers, Brisbane, Australia – many thanks to her for these comments. We have not tried this technique, but it does seem to make sense. Perhaps you might contact us if you have had similar experiences.
Why are some tattoos NOT be removable by laser?
Laser tattoo removal is not magic! There are many occasions when it just does not work very well. Why is this?
There is a host of reasons why this treatment doesn’t work too well in some cases including:
Physical issues: depth of ink, ink concentration, amount of ink, pre- existing scar tissue, type of ink
Laser issues: wrong wavelength, fluence, spot size, pulsewidth
Physiological issues: metabolism, age, skin condition, patient’s health, etc
Here is an excellent blog post on this topic by Helena Carter of DeInk, Auckland, NZ.
However, it should be pointed out that the vast majority of tattoos will fade significantly following a number of laser treatments, especially if the laser operator is properly trained and knows what they are doing.
