I have no idea if my table/chair is American. This piece of furniture is
Q. both a table and a chair. When you lift the table top it becomes the
back of the chair and the shelf below the table top becomes the chair seat.
It is made of wood. It looks like oak. It is not ornate but very sturdy and in Echoes of Yesterday
excellent condition. I do not have a photo of it at this time. If you have any
information about this table/chair, please let me know. Thank you. —Lupe A Mall for Antiques, Collectibles & Yesterday’s Items
Lupe - Your “table chair”, also known as a “chair table”, probably is Historic Downtown Area
A. American. It is a form developed in this country in the 17th century 109 Broadway, Kissimmee, FL 34741
and was widespread throughout the Colonies and the early Federal period. It
was especially useful in small cabins where space was limited and furniture (407) 847-2300
was scarce. They were made mostly in the East. A similar piece called the Mon-Sat 10-5 (Fri 10-4)
“hutch table” revealed shelved storage below the top instead of a seat. Visit us on Facebook:
Contemporary construction of both items pretty much ceased in the 1880s but
some examples of both, but mostly the chair table, have been made off Echoes of Yesterday Antique Mall
and on for years. The key to the age of the piece is the construction details, 2
the joinery and the number of boards in the top. The fewer the boards, the
older the piece. The plainer versions were usually made in the 19th century.
I suggest you have the piece examined in person by a reputable dealer of 18th Antiques
and 19th century American antiques to verify its authenticity. primitives
