From ten-years of living in and photographing South Beach upon returning home from grad school, I culled
55 images (from a couple thousand) into a crisp and edgy look at that remarkable people, time and place.
Conceiving the project while at college, I began to understand what made South Beach so special.
For those of us who’d grown up there in the 1950s and 60s especially, we didn’t fully get it. The elderly
people of South Beach were shunned and ignored. “God’s waiting room” was one pejorative referent as was “a
gerontological ghetto.” To the openminded, it was lively and fascinating–but we were few and far between. We
were up-close witnesses to the ending of old world Jewry whose roots extended back to the Czarist pogroms
and through the Nazi Holocaust, to our forefathers who filtered though Ellis Island and dispersed throughout KIDDIE RECORDS WEEKLY
