Questions & A. Martha - Thanks for the compliment! I’m glad you enjoy my columns. I
enjoy writing them. I do not have a book out on repair and refinishing and as far
as I can tell the complete book hasn’t been written yet. I have been looking for
Common Sense Answers thirty years. My new book is about furniture identification. (Details are at the end
of this column.). The very best info I have found on finishing is in Bob Flexner’s
book “Understanding Wood Finishing”. It’s available in paperback for about $20
with Fred Taylor in most bookstores and online. I worked in the trade for over 20 years and I still
refer to his book for details. There are lots of other books out there on the subject
but none of them cover the science of finishing as well as Bob’s book.
Q. Did Gustav Stickley or one of his brothers ever publish the recipe or the Q. I have a parlor suite that belonged to my mother’s mother. It has two straight
ingredients of their trademark furniture polish? chairs, one with 2 arms, one rocker (rockers rock on a wood base) and what
—Katherine B. I would call a settee. It is a complete set. The arms on the chairs are covered.
On the settee they are covered down to the seat. The covering is in bad shape.
A. Katherine - The only reference I have to a polish by any of the Stickley boys It is like dry rot. The webbing is letting go and what I think is horse hair and
is called Craftsman Furniture Polish, cleverly enough. It has Gustav’s trademark something like straw is showing underneath on some of the pieces but some
compass emblem on it so maybe this is it. It may be available from Rockler are still all together. It is done with the old what I call cut tacks. The wheels on
Woodworking at www.rockler.com or from Van Dykes Restorers at http://www. front are wooden. It is a kind of light wood, carved and cut out on top, square in

of Gustav Stickley. How do I find out what I have? I bought some webbing but then thought I
should talk to someone as it belongs to me and my sister. Here are some pictures
Q. Hi Fred - Do you have a book with information on refinishing or shall I showing some of the problems. If you need any picture taken a certain way,
continue to trim out your columns? please feel free to tell us. Thank you very much for any help you can give me.
— Thanks. Martha —Nancy
