 Regional Foosball Tournament
Regional Foosball Tournament
The 26 Degree Brewery in Pompano Beach, Florida housed the 16 Tornado foosball tables—that’s one table for every for four players. Everyone played at the same time, with no waiting and no conflicts.
This was a three-day, four-event points race: It began Friday with a DYP, utilizing the Swiss system, with each participant playing several rounds and playing with a different partner each round. Points were awarded according to the number of wins and losses.
Next, a Bring Your Partner (BYP) event commenced. Yet again, points were gained for wins and losses. These events were strictly timed, with a specific start and end.
When the Saturday action commenced,

the players were all well-rested and fed, since the action didn’t resume until 3 p.m.
Finishing the previous day’s events was the first order of business, then a break and, at 6 p.m., the Designated Draw Your Partner event kicked off. In the Designated, the competitors were paired in a team consisting of a higher-ranked and a lower- ranked player. During the competition, the lower-ranked player was required to play the forward position, while the better player was designated as the goalie. This was a unique twist! Once again, the day’s events started and finished at a specific time.
During the last day of competition, the Thunderdome Singles event commenced at noon.
Evan MacGregor and Mike Green.
This too, featured the Swiss format.
The Thunderdome competition concluded just after 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. Just as the organizers had planned, there were no match conflicts and players were able to play non-stop.
I should probably mention that the payouts were much higher—even higher than the current major tournaments on the U.S. tour. Take for instance, the player who won the points race, Evan MacGregor, an amateur from Austin, Texas walked away with $7,800!
Keep in mind, this Thunderdome Limited was custom designed to offer a glimpse of what is possible using the Swiss system of play. Variations of this format have been used for years in Europe and America.
