Organizers can design the event in the way that suits them. They can accommodate varying number of players at different skill levels, choosing the number of qualifying rounds—all scheduled to start and finish at specific times.
What are the advantages and dis- advantages of putting aside the double elimination format for the Swiss style format?
Two positive points can be immediately drawn from this alternative format for playing competitive foosball. First, players who enter will play considerably more during the tournament, in addition to playing a wider variety of other players. (This makes for more opportunity to create social connections.) Second, organizers can gain more control of the pace of play. No conflicts mean a smoother-running tournament, as well.
There are a few “holes” in the Swiss system. Using the proper software is necessary. (Thunderdome used Modern Foosball, which does have some cost associated with it.) Also, even with the best software, if the tournament is held with an

odd number of players, the results can be skewed. Without completely transparent results, players may feel as if they aren’t properly seeded when the finals are held.
Moving forward with a new approach to competitive foosball has its risks, especially if the players don’t see the full benefit.
Personally, I can say that the local 518 Foosball Club has adopted the Monster DYP, a variation of the Swiss system, for all our Friday night DYP events. Almost all the players will tell you, we love it! Even if we have a small number of players (four teams minimum), we usually hold seven rounds of constant play. Everyone gets to play with a different partner each round. Once we hold the knockout round, or the finals, we are paired with another player into double elimination rounds, using the more traditional best of three game matches to determine the winner.
We really enjoy the fact that none of the players worry about being paired for the whole tourney with a less experienced player, simply because you get to play with a wide variety of partners.
Since our last Smashdown here in the 518, we have decided our next regional tourney is going to be a limited Swiss-style event. With six tables, we will open the competition to 24 players, first-come, first- served. Entry fees will be collected during advance registration.
