Start Screen Features
Windows 10 can be used on Touch Screen computers,
tablets, cell phones, etc. or on non-touch screen with a
mouse, such as on computers.
Tiles – the “squares” or apps on the Start Screen serve as
links to the various apps and programs. Use scroll bar to
see all the tiles available. Rearrange Tiles - simply drag
the tile to the new location.
Metro UI (user interface) – another term for the Start Screen with the tiles. Start Screen apps usually fill
the entire window. Some apps have a different appearance than when using Desktop, such as Internet
Explorer and other browsers
Switch List – appears on left of screen showing all open apps and applications. Point to upper left Hot
Corner and drag down left side; use on both Start Screen and Desktop.
Shortcut Menu – menu pops up when you right click on an object. Gives you choices of commands.
Apps Bar – appears at bottom of screen when you right
click on a blank area on Start Screen. (Depends on computer
setup.)
Zoom Button – in lower right hot corner of Start Screen. Lower and upper left Hot
Used to Zoom in or out. C
Snap – display a Win 10 app to left or right side of screen.
Drag bar to unsnap.
USING START SCREEN TO OPEN/CLOSE:
1. Make sure you are on the Start Screen for the next activities. (If
it doesn’t say START, press the Windows key to access
Opening Apps/Programs/Tiles: From the Start Screen, apps fill the entire screen and sometimes work
differently from Desktop applications (ie. Internet Explorer). There are several ways to open apps.
• Click on the tile or name (ie. click on Word tile to open Word program.)
• Right click on blank area, click All Apps, click on tile or name
• Start typing the app name; enter or click on correct icon.
• Open Charms Bar, choose Search, type app name, click on correct one.
Hot Corner – point mouse to or tap upper/lower left/right corners to display menus. Left hot corners
display thumbnail of open applications (Switch List). Right hot corners open the Charms bar.
2. To open app from Start Screen: click Mail tile. The Microsoft Mail app opens and fills the screen.
3. Leave the app open, click the lower left hot corner Start icon/thumbnail to go back to Start Screen.
(You might see the Windows icon instead. Either Start or Windows works.)
