Volunteer Emergency Responders
Employees will be granted time off on an unpaid basis to perform emergency duties as a
volunteer firefighter or volunteer ambulance service personnel during times when the Governor
of New York has declared a state of emergency. Employees may substitute accrued vacation pay
for any unpaid portion of leave to perform such emergency duties.
Voting Time Off
Employees who do not have sufficient time outside of their regular working hours to vote in a
statewide election may request time off to vote. If possible, employees should make their request
at least two days in advance of the election. Up to three hours of paid time off will be provided,
at the beginning or end of the employee’s regular shift, whichever will allow the freest time for
voting and the least time off work.
Crime Victim’s Leave
Any employee who is a crime victim may take unpaid leave to appear as a witness, consult with
the district attorney, or attend a proceeding related to the crime. The employee must request
such leave prior to the day of their attendance and may be required to provide verification of
attendance. For purposes of this policy, “victim” includes the aggrieved party (or the aggrieved
party’s next of kin if the aggrieved party is deceased as a result of the offense), the representative
of a victim, a good Samaritan, or a person pursuing an application or enforcement of an order of
protection.
Blood & Bone Marrow Donor Leave
Eligible employees working an average of 20 or more hours per week will be granted up to three
hours of leave on an unpaid basis in any twelve (12) month period to donate blood. Eligible
employees working an average of 20 or more hours per week will be granted up to 24 work hours
of leave per donation on an unpaid basis to donate bone marrow. Employees may substitute sick
leave during leave under this section; otherwise, leave is unpaid. An employee should provide
their manager with as much advance notice as possible when scheduling this leave.
For information regarding these provisions or other rights or benefits under New York law, please
contact Human Resources.
Relationship with Other Types of Leave
NY PFL will run concurrently with any other leave law applicable to the employee when the
reason for leave qualifies under both. You may not receive short-term disability and Paid Family
Leave benefits at the same time. You may not take more than 26 combined weeks of short-term
disability and Paid Family Leave in a 52-week period. If you are unable to work and qualify for
Workers’ Compensation Benefits, you may not use Paid Family Leave benefits at the same time
as you are receiving Workers’ Compensation benefits. If you are receiving reduced earnings, you
may be eligible for Paid Family Leave. Please check with Human Resources.
