Four—Secret Portrait Painter
“Aimi told DJ about going to the hospital’s emergency room, about the pain shot, about the X-ray that showed her arm was broken, about the orthopedic surgeon with ebony skin and big black eyes, and about her pink cast.
“I’m glad your arm has healed,” said DJ. “I would rather paint your portrait without a pink cast on your arm.” “Aimi laughed. “What does DJ stand for?” she
asked.
“It just stands for DJ,” replied the real live artist.
“My parents couldn’t agree on a name for me. Finally they wrote the letters of the alphabet on little pieces of paper and put them in a basket. Then each parent picked out one piece of paper. The letter ‘D’ was on the first piece of paper. The letter ‘J’ was on the second piece of paper. So they named me DJ.”
Aimi laughed and laughed. “That’s a funny way to get a name,” she said. “DJ is only two letters. What a short name.”
“Makes it easy to spell and write,” said the real live artist.
“My name has four letters,” said Aimi. “And Toni’s name has four letters. But Tad’s name has only three letters.”
“Who are they?” asked DJ.
“Toni and Tad are twins,” said Aimi. “They’re my best friends. They’re on a ten-day camping trip with their cousin Connor. Connor is my friend, too.”
Connor,” said DJ. “Now that’s a long name. It’s twice as long as Tad’s name. And one third as long as your name and Toni’s name.”
