After we spent what seemed like an endless stream of monotonous days and nights in the hospital, the leading Hematologist came in to meet Johnny. He sat down and said, “I haven't been wrong much in my career, but I've been wrong twice lately, and both times were about you. When you first arrived in
the emergency room we assumed you had three hours to live. Your Calcium levels were incompatable with life. But then you lived past that. We then assumed you'd live for a few days. There was no way someone in your condition could possibly survive. But then you lived past that." He then paused for a moment while he looked over my dad, and then confidently said, "And you've been healing. Medically, it doesn’t make any sense." Another pause. He then said, "Someone is looking out for you, Johnny. At this point, I would normally tell someone in your condition that you don't have much longer. Maybe 6 weeks at the most. The problem is you were diagnosed with a benign mass in your liver many years ago, and it has grown. It has been pushing against your bile ducts. You have some toxicity that has built up. It's been causing problems. We can’t do a biopsy because we are afraid that if you start bleeding we won't be able to stop it. But there may be ways to take care of this. But you need to be strong, and you are not strong right now. So I want you to go home and get stronger. I want you to eat and
