British Action: A British war fleet of 30 battleships and 300 supply ships arrived in New York Harbor. Under the command of General William Howe and his brother Admiral Lord Richard Howe, the fleet consisted of 1,200 cannons, 30,000 soldiers and 10,000 sailors.
July 2
American Action: Twelve of the thirteen colonies, with New York abstaining, voted to approve the Virginia Resolution for independence.
July 4
American Action: The Declaration of Independence was adopted.
August 2
American Action: Fifty-six members of the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence.
