territory in the western part of the United States (1804-1806)
• Founder and architect of the University of Virginia (1819); Jefferson designed its
buildings, planned its curriculum, and oversaw its construction.
• Sold his personal library of 6,487 books to the federal government in 1815 to restart the Library of Congress, which had been burned during the British invasion
of Washington during the War of 1812

Death
• July 4, 1826 – Jefferson died at Monticello on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He was 83 years old.
• John Adams died on the same day, just a few hours after Jefferson. Adam’s last whispered words were, “Thomas Jefferson survives.”
