Maitri is friendliness towards those who are similar to you in spiritual attainment. Adopt a satwic attitude when meeting with them instead of developing the rajasic/tamasic qualities of competition, jealousy, and hate. Their happiness is your happiness; their success is your success. When you observe someone resolving a problem, or practicing meditation and devotion, you should appreciate their efforts. If, in the spirit of satwic competition, you attempt to exceed their spiritual efforts, you will not diminish the other person in any way by your own efforts.
Karuna, or compassion, is a Divine quality to cultivate when meeting those people who are struggling with obstacles and committing errors you have already overcome. Instead of viewing those people as inferior because they remind you of your own struggles or pain, be compassionate. For when you were once in their place, you needed people’s compassion. Now you are in a situation to direct your compassion towards those who are distressed and to alleviate their suffering.
Upeksha is characterized by indifference. If you were to encounter negative types of individuals who are crude or highly uncivilized, such as thieves or murderers, it is important not to encourage them by
