criticism, and material objects alone. You are not worshipping God for the attainment of the Kingdom of Heaven and spiritual peace. You are worshipping “other gods.”
A story from India illustrates this point. A simple farmer repeated the mantra of Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth. Pleased by the man’s prayers, Kubera presented himself before the farmer and asked what boon he would like to receive. The farmer, whose vision was limited to only his everyday needs, said, “I need sixty large loads of straw for my animals.” Since that was all he could think of, that was what he received from the limitless treasury of Kubera.
Similarly, when you worship God—the source and substratum of all that exists in the universe— for perishable, petty attainments, that is what you will receive. And as a result, what you attain will be little compared to what you could have received: the in nite expansion of the Self, which is your birthright.
Second Commandment
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
