and form. The error is in trying to permanently bring God into the realm of relativity. However, the subtle meaning of the commandment is usually overlooked, and people try to interpret its words too literally. The commandment should not give you the wrong idea of suddenly renouncing every name and form for God. That cannot be done.
It is impossible for a person to worship God without having some concept to support the mind. Every human being is a born “idol worshipper” in the sense that he depends on symbols. Every thought is a form; every concept is a form and every movement requires a form to lean upon. The form may be concrete, or it may be abstract. Even the idea that God is without form creates a form in the mind of one who has not realized God.
Any limited name, form, or concept that you visualize as God can be considered an idol. If you consider God to be all-pervading, that concept can also be considered a psychological idol. If you consider God to be all-compassionate, you have again created a type of idol. If you worship God with any form that can be described or visualized, you are using a type of idol.
No matter how one may try to avoid all images in religious practice, all churches have them in one form or another. Even if you do not have any images in the church, the place of worship in itself is an image.
