Chapter Seven
Take Up the Cross and Follow Me
The entire mysticism of Christ’s teachings can be summed up in the ancient symbol of the Cross, which is also an important part
of Vedic symbolism. In the Cross, a vertical line intersects a horizontal line.
The horizontal line symbolizes vision that is caught up in the world of the mind and senses, the world of relativity, the world of names and forms, the world of material ambitions, the world of illusion, infatuation and bondage. To be involved in the world is to follow the path of preya—the pleasant, which continues to keep the soul entangled in the world-process.
When your mind is constantly thinking of the past, struggling to face present situations, and planning for the future, it is working horizontally. On the horizontal plane, you are constantly pressured by karmas. While steadily unloading karmas with the left hand, you continue loading more with the right.
