In exasperation, people cry, “When will I have time for prayer? When will I have time for meditation?” That is the great puzzle. How does one live in a world of inescapable responsibilities that will not allow you a moment of peace, and still be able to approach God?
The secret to approaching God reveals itself in the vertical line of the Cross. Through the Cross, Lord Jesus mystically teaches us to develop the vertical vision that intercepts the horizontal timeline of past, present and future and soar into the realm of the transcendental. It is a movement through the mind and intellect towards intuition, wherein the human soul merges with God.
When your mind turns towards God, it is functioning in a vertical direction. The vertical line points to the transcendence of the world of time and space, to the recognition of the world of the spirit. It is indicative of the path of shreya—the path of blessedness, which leads to Liberation.
With vertical vision you develop an awareness that true happiness is not in the past or future. It is not in material ambition, but in spiritual aspiration. True happiness is deep within your heart, where time and space are left behind. The Upanishadic teaching of “Neti-Neti”—”Not this, Not this,” is the recognition that the path of the body, mind, senses and ego are ultimately not the path to that Supreme
