chapter fourteen 281
situations seem so pleasant and therefore delightful to your ego. Other circumstances are unpleasant to your ego and therefore frustrating. However, in spite of whatever circumstances arise, you will eventually nd that the substance of your inner life is empty if you lack aspiration for God-realization. By merely chasing the mirage of pleasure, the Salt, the more profound meaning to your life, will be missing and therefore you will continue to tumble back into this world from one into another.
As you advance and look back, you realize that you owe more to your frustrations than to your prosperity for fortitude and inner enrichment. If you possess that understanding, both prosperity and adversity are viewed as blessings proceeding from God. That understanding is the Salt that avors everything within your life.
True religion or the spiritual path is the discovery of what immense glory lies within your heart. If ego is not the main focus of your personality, if you enjoy the sweetness of Divine Presence, if your prayer originates from the depth of your heart, if you radiate goodwill and charity around you, then you are a Light placed on a hill. Not only are you a Light to yourself, but a Light to everyone around you. You are the Salt of the Earth. Not only do you “ avor” everything you do for yourself, but the very sight of you becomes “ avorable” for others.
