Every festival in an advanced religious system is based upon the commemoration of spiritual or mystical events. Behind every holy day, what is really being celebrated is the ancient theme of the victory of Light over darkness. The spirit has, as it were, battled against the forces of darkness from time immemorial and has proven its supremacy over matter again and again. This is what is symbolized in every religious festival. Highly evolved beings from various religions of the world have presented this fact symbolically in the form of stories about Avatars, Sages, Saints and others who have engaged in this ancient battle.
Lord Jesus—the Divine Avatara
The role of Lord Jesus, seen through the eyes of the Vedic mind, is the role of an Avatara, an incarnation of God. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (NKJV Matthew 11:28) The “me” He was referring to is the Universal Self. Much in the same way, in the Gita, Lord Krishna says, “Whosoever surrenders to me will be free of all limitations and attain Liberation.”
