made a whip. Then He chased everyone out of the temple, together with their sheep and cattle. He turned over the tables of the moneychangers and scattered their coins. (CEV John 2:13—16)
The root-cause of all the disharmony and restlessness of today is the fact that the temple of the human heart has become an abode of “money- changers.” It has been de led by the impressions generated on the basis of egoism, attachment, hatred, and infatuation. The human heart, which ought to be a seat of Divine impressions, has become a seat of the satanic qualities of pride, cruelty, hypocrisy, falsehood and greed. The doves of higher values are sold for petty material gains. Spiritual grace is sold for perishable rewards on the earth. Prayer is conditioned by egoistic demands. Surrender to God is replaced by hypocritical humility.
This state of affairs must change. For this temple of the heart to be restored to its original sanity, chitta shuddhi (purity of the heart) must be promoted. Lord Jesus—the Divine Aspiration in man—must gather the small cords of mental thought-waves and convert them into the whip of viveka (discriminative reason). With this whip of viveka, an aspirant can dispel the impurities that de le the Divine Temple. Without chitta shuddhi, it is not possible to enjoy real peace and harmony within oneself or in the world outside.
