Following is a humorous parable to help you understand the dilemma in life that distracts many from the spiritual path: Once a group of thieves snuck into a dilapidated temple because they had been informed that hidden somewhere within this temple were treasures. Seeing a small hole as they entered, the leader placed his hand inside to see if there were any valuables. Instead of discovering a treasure, he was stung by a scorpion. However, being the leader and not wanting to lose face before the others, he shook his hand, and as he moved on, said, “What a wonderful experience!” One by one his followers all did the very same thing: reached inside the hole, received a painful sting, shook their hand, and said, “What a wonderful experience!”
Similarly, a person who has become very wealthy may create the impression before others that he is enjoying life abundantly; but actually, this is not so. Dissatis ed with the emptiness of wealth, a rich person may then decide he would be happy if he had power. So using his money he tries to enter into politics to acquire power and recognition. When at last the desired power is attained, he eventually realizes that it did not bring him the happiness he expected. Nevertheless, because of all the money and effort it took for him to attain that power, and
