What is Osteoarthritis? A lot of people say they
have it, but what is it really, and does it have any
                                                               implications?

Osteoarthritis is defined as a disease causing
breakdown of the surfaces of a joint in the body.
Think of your joint surfaces as if it was a bowling ball
rolling down a bowling alley. The surface of a bowling
ball is nice and smooth, which allows it to roll and
glide really easily. Now imagine the bowling ball was
no longer smooth, maybe more like a rough boulder –
                                                               it may be somewhat round but doesn’t roll as easily;
                                                               osteoarthritis is like that boulder.
Although common, osteoarthritis is not normal, even though we think of it as being part of old age.

Unfortunately, other issues occur along with the joint surface breakdown, including stiffness and tightness of
the affected joint. This makes life difficult in all sorts of ways, such as getting out of bed and moving in the
morning, putting on socks, starting up an exercise program, or getting up from a chair. It makes simple
movements more difficult than they should be, and anything more than that seems impossible.

The next question is, is it curable? Unfortunately, no, and although we may seem like it, physiotherapists are
not magicians. Osteoarthritis is a change within the joint so it cannot be cured, but it can be managed, and we
        can help.

Mackie Physiotherapy is offering a FREE in-service about the causes and types of osteoarthritis pain and how
to manage them. Call to book your spot today or contact us through our website. Feel free to give us a call or
book in with any one of our physiotherapists to discuss the management of your arthritis.
