THE  DOG  OF  VINCENNES.








                                         officer  named  S i  Leger,  who  was  im­

                                       St.  Bartholomew,  wished  to  keep  with

                             him  a  greyhound which  lie had  brought up, and

                             wliich  was  very  much  attached  to  him.  The
                            prison  authorities, however, harshly refined  this

                             moderate  indulgence* and  sent  away  the  dog  to

                             the  home  of  its  master  in  the  Hue  des  Lions,

                             Saint  Paul, Paris.  Next morning* the greyhound

                             returned  alone  to Vincennes, and  hegan  to  bark
                             under  the  windows  of  the  tower,  towards  the

                             place where  its  master was  confined.  St.  Leger

                             approached  the window, and looking' through the
                             bars  was  delighted  to see  his  faithful  dog  again;

                             and  the latter  immediately began to jump about
