Wrap  the  rope  around  your  left  hand  twice,  as

                    shown in the photograph.








                                      Alpine Butterfly: Step 2


































                    Move  the  turn  closest  to  your  fingertips  to  lie
                    between the other two turns.





                   Unlike  the loop knot (see  page 102),  the alpine butterfly
                can and safely does serve to bear a critical load. It stands

                up to tension from either direction without weakening.
