Twist each loop separately toward the center of

                    the knot.

The Spanish bowline, also known as the chair knot, is a very
strong knot. It is safe and holds securely even under a great

load. It can be used to hoist large, heavy objects, such as
equipment. In rescue work one loop goes over a person’s

head and down under the armpits, the other loop around
the legs behind the knees, allowing an unconscious person
to be lowered down a mountainside (or over the side of a

large ship and into a boat below). For use with a conscious
person, one loop goes around each leg and the person being

lowered holds on to the rope. The loops are easy to adjust
during tying, since the rope moves freely through the knot.
