UNDERTONE EXAMPLES
Rihanna has warm undertones Jennifer Lopez has a warm or yellow undertone
Miley Cyrus has a neutral undertone Nicole Kidman has a cool undertone Beyonce has a warm undertone
This is what we refer to when we talk about warm vs cool colours. On the colour wheel, warm colours and cool colours are on separate sides. Blues, greens, and purple are cool, whereas oranges, yellows, and reds are warmer. This is important when figuring out undertones.
This term refers to using the same colour theme. In beauty, we use it when talking about using the same tones to create the whole makeup look. For example, using pink blush, pink eyeshadow, and pink lipstick (all in the same tones, or at least similar) would be a monochromatic look.
When you’re starting out, one of the biggest things that you may wonder about is how to figure out skin undertones. In order to choose the correct foundation, you have to look at your client’s veins on their wrists to figure out their undertone. If you see purple and blue veins, this means that they have a cool undertone. If you see green veins, then they have a warm undertone. If the veins don’t really show as blue or green, then they have a neutral undertone. On clients with darker skin tones whose veins may not show, ask them to stand in front of a white wall as this will allow you to see what tones show up most. Foundation bottles will often describe the undertone of the shade by having a Y, R, or N on the label. This means yellow, red or neutral. A yellow undertone means warm, red means cool, and neutral is simply neutral. Clients with darker skin tones may have olive or golden undertones, which means they have a warmer complexion, or red undertones, which again means a cool undertone.

Always test a little bit of foundation on your client’s face (jaw area) until you get the right tone. Make sure that the foundation also matches the client’s chest area (you do not want the face to be a different colour than the body).
