FINDING WORK & ASSISTING
Your personality plays a huge role in this industry. Always be professional, patient, have positive energy, and understand how to read your client’s energy (and the room). It is also important to be mindful of the client by not wearing too much perfume, making sure you do not have bad breath, and wearing deodorant.
Do not give out your own information or promote yourself. You are there as a part of the key artist's team, not your own. Remember that it is not your client and your behaviour will reflect on the key artist that you are assisting.
Always bring your kit or set bag! You always want to be prepared for anything.
Pay attention to what the key artist is using for products. Your job is normally to pack the set-bag, so you need to make sure that you are putting in the proper products that the key artist used. For example, you need to pack their powder shade, lipstick for touch ups, etc. Additionally, when you or the key artist is working with A-List clients, it is very common for press to be doing interviews afterwards. You should write down each product in your phone so that you can easily give the press the proper makeup product names.
Wear black, be clean and presentable (for example, keep short nails). It’s not about you; you want to look clean and put together, but never wearing over the top glam. You don’t want to be the spotlight.
Be friendly but not overly outgoing. Again you are there to make the key artist's job easier. It’s essential that you don’t make it about you. Sometimes you won’t talk all day, and that’s okay! Chime in when it is appropriate or if you are getting talked to directly, but it is extremely important to read the room. When things are high energy or there is
a lot going on, just take a step back and jump back in when you are needed.
Document! From personal experience, it’s important to grab action shots of the key artist in action. This might be used for major press articles or social media. Ask the key artist beforehand for exactly what they need from you and/or if they want BTS (behind the scenes) images taken. Again, always read the room and only pull out your phone or camera when the time is right.
Check in with your key artist and make sure they have everything they need. I personally love to grab coffee or extra snacks that I know the key artist likes. When I feel like things have settled (perhaps after the talent has performed or gone on stage), I’ll pull out some food and a drink and give it to the key artist. Always go above and beyond! After all, that's how you get booked again.
