ARTE, CULTURA E HISTORIA
Sauk City and Prairie du Sac are twin villages located along the Wisconsin River, 30 minutes from Madison, the state capital. Named after the Sauk (Sac) Native Americans living in the area in the mid-1700s, the area is widely known today as Sauk Prairie.
Sauk City, being settled mostly by German-speaking immigrants and founded in the 1840s by the Hungarian pioneer Agoston Haraszthy, is the oldest remaining incorporated village in Wisconsin. Before moving to California where he became the father of California viticulture, Haraszthy began what is today the Wollersheim Winery.
The northern village of Prairie du Sac grew as English-speaking “Yankees” moved from eastern states into the riverway area. Beyond the villages, many immigrants settled and farmed on the vast surrounding prairie. Descendents of these pioneer families are still living and farming on this fertile land today.
The leadership of Sauk Prairie understands that nurturing art, creativity, and talent results in a quality workforce and community. This begins with strong arts education programs for youth in the Sauk Prairie School District. Co-curricular music activities, such as concert band, marching band, choir, competitive show choirs, musicals, and more are supported by local parent-led non-pro t, Sauk Prairie Music Association (SPMA). The Sauk Prairie Theatre Guild produces several plays each year, providing all ages with an opportunity to participate in local theater.
