Qualified Teacher Status in the UK
If you are a qualified teacher from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA this
helpful guide will support you in obtaining UK QTS so you will be classed as a fully
qualified teacher in the UK. Don’t worry if you are unable to secure qualified teacher
status, you will still be able to obtain teaching work in the UK. The main difference
between holding QTS and not holding QTS is that without QTS you can only work in one
school for up 1 academic year (this may vary between schools) and with QTS this will not
only mean you can stay in a UK school on-going and even receive sponsorship, this can
also expand your salary progression within a UK school.
What is QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)?
Qualified teachers who trained outside of England can obtain QTS by having their
qualifications assessed by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. This includes
teachers who trained in Scotland, Northern Ireland, the European Economic Area (EEA),
Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America (USA).
Do I qualify for QTS?
• Have you completed a B.eD, PGCE or relative teaching qualification from any of the
above countries?
• Have you completed your registration period?
• Have you registered with the board of education to declare that you are registered
in your own country and have proof of this?
