 CHAPTER 8: ROUTINE
Hopefully you can smell what I’m cooking with this next quote. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a hugely successful star. He’s an actor, producer, businessman, retired professional wrestler and football player, and father, so I’m going to choose to listen when he talks about success.
“Success isn’t always about ‘greatness’. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work gains success. Greatness will come.”
Consistency, in my understanding here, alludes to routine. Maintaining a routine means being consistent in your day to day, or your habits. Building great habits is the foundation where future greatness rests.
I didn’t think about the importance of routine until I was in professional baseball. I had to learn it then because I was on my own and if I didn't add structure to my day, I wouldn't get much done. It took some time to find the right answers here. I had to learn the timing of everything, from going to bed to waking up, when to eat meals, when to get to the field, and then the steps once I was at the field. Then there’s a difference with home games vs. away games, and even the structure of an off day. See what I mean? There’s a lot to manage, so the sooner you can figure out what works for you, the better.
Developing a daily routine will make your day more efficient and help you feel more in control. It's a great tool that teaches you to make room for what's most important, aids you in forming healthy habits, and like the tools we previously discussed, can help reduce stress, which as you know now, will help you perform at your best.
I still remember when I was little my grandfather would say “When you wake up in the morning wash your face, brush your teeth, and comb your hair.” Such simple information right? As a kid, I didn't think much of what he was actually trying to tell me, I saw it as surface information only. Of course I'll do that stuff grandpa! But as I've grown up, I've come to realize he was certainly onto something much deeper.
