In the past, rural women were versatile, not only helping with the farm work and doing house chores but also making such handicrafts as bamboo hats, rush mats and hats, and twined flowers, which can be used in daily life and raise a family’s income. As times have changed, these versatile women have left the rural villages and entered the factories, and many daily necessities have been replaced by machine-made products. Indeed, life is becoming more convenient, but the mental connection is being lost. However, the rural village culture has recently regained attention, while society also now encourages the active involvement of woman power. Finally, we have the opportunity to witness the rebirth and innovation of rural women’s handicraft skills.
The farmers’ association is an important element in rural villages’ development of manpower resources, which has been proven in the past from the home economics clubs. These clubs are the most appropriate place to cultivate rural women’s talents. To encourage rural women’s self-learning and self-growth and actively assist them in developing their professional skills, the Council of Agriculture has begun promoting the innovative transformation of the industries in rural communities and developing the micro industries counseling project, such as “Mother Tien (dining)” and “Country Fine Handicrafts (skills).”
The government aids rural women in starting all kinds of interests in handicrafts, increasing their personal creative skills, combining local specialties and materials, and assisting them in creating and developing handmade products with the rural characteristics through professional teaching. On one hand, it will spur rural women’s growth in professional abilities. On the other hand, it will help develop value-added industries with local rural characteristics and vitalize the local economy. The result of the joint efforts has been rewarding. Now, the fine handicrafts of rural women present a profound charm. They are not only exquisite but also fashionable, and now “agricultural fashion” is beginning to take shape.
Through the professional counseling of Prof. Su Wen-Ching’s team from the Department of Design at National Taiwan Normal University, we are glad to see the commercialization of the country’s fine handicrafts and expect to see more great works that combine local agricultural characteristics and perform well in the cultural and creative market.
