Teach Tearmainn Helping to Transform a Woman’s Life
by the control and violence. But what I can offer is hope to other women experiencing what I have experienced as I have been supported in every way since I left that faithful day over two years ago. Our safe, caring, loving home and family life has been restored in great part to the support we have received from the team in Teach Tearmainn. Our recovery has not been easy as myself and my children have begun to process and realise the horror and trauma we have endured. But, we are proof that it is possible to move on and there are strong supports in our communities offering invaluable support and care to do so.
Carol is now living abuse free. Teach Tearmainn gave Carol much needed refuge to keep her and her children safe when she decided to leave her home fleeing domestic violence. Here are some of the ways Teach Tearmainn were able to support and empower Carol and her children to move on with their lives:
• While staying in the refuge Carol was supported to apply for housing assistance and financial assistance as she had no financial means when she arrived.
• Carol was supported to complete the paperwork to apply for a barring order against her ex-husband to the local district court.
• Carol was accompanied to court and supported on the day by the court accompaniment worker.
• Carol’s children were supported with one-to-one support while they were staying in the refuge, this support has continued.
• Carol was provided a transitional house for a period of six months while she awaited to be housed by Kildare County council.
• Carol still attends one to one support through Teach Tearmainn’s outreach service, where she has also attended some support groups also.
Matt was prosecuted for his abuse of Carol and was sentenced to a prison term. Carol still avails of the support we offer at Teach Tearmainn as her experiences have been so traumatic it will take time for Carol and her children to recover fully. In the meantime, Teach Tearmainn are happy to report that Carol and her children are doing very well in their recovery and are living full and abuse free lives happily together.
