EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS
Augustana College believes that cost should not be a prohibitive factor which keeps students from experiencing
the transformational power of off-campus and international study. We recognize that each student faces unique
challenges which might impact a decision to study away from our campus, but we are working to remove financial
concerns from the decision-making process through Augie Choice and other grant opportunities.
In addition to Augustana financial aid,
Augie Choice and other internal
scholarships, the Office of International
& Off-Campus Programs encourages
1 and scholarships particular to study
students to research and apply
for appropriate external grants
away. These are often competitive,
and keeping track of the deadlines
and requirements for any scholarship
is essential to a successful application.
Some good places to start researching
study away grants or scholarships include:
Many of the most prominent grants are highly
competitive and will typically only apply to semester or
summer abroad programs, rather than faculty-led
J-term programs. Here is a sampling of several of the
most significant grant programs:
GILMAN SCHOLARSHIPS
Major grants for students who receive federal Pell
Grants and who are enrolled in a program of at least 1
month in a single country. Students must be endorsed
by Augustana, and we require a GPA of 3.50 in order
to sponsor a student for these highly competitive
national scholarships.

BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS
Provide unique funding opportunities for U.S.
undergraduate and graduate students to study less
commonly taught languages in world regions critical to
U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad,
including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe,
Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

In addition to these, there are many scholarships
particular to specific destinations as well as
scholarships provided by partner
organizations who sponsor most of
Augustana’s semester abroad programs.
Students, once they have selected a
program, particularly a semester or
summer program should seek out
both provider-sponsored grants
and grants particular to the country
or region of their program. Any
of the search engines or
scholarship listings cited above 2
can help with this research.
When a student receives an
outside grant, particularly one
which acts as a discount to the
program cost rather than a direct
payment to the student, should
consult with the International &
Off-Campus Programs office so that
the amount of the scholarship can be
included as part of the student’s financial
aid package and charges for the semester
or summer abroad can be reduced.
