 CUSTOMER NEED: INSIGHT TWO
INDEPENDENCE ACADEMY
The underlying need and motivation of MDS customers is to achieve independence. Given their condition, participants and families acknowledge that there will always be the need for support. However, the level of support could be reduced if the right development is put in place to change their current circumstances. As such, MDS customers view MDS almost like an ‘academy’ that fosters independence.
Independence is a customer goal. What each participant aspires for, and what their families hopes for them, is based on the participant’s individual circumstance and what ‘independence’ means to them personally.
Participants seek to display independence in their day-to-day, aspiring to be ‘as close to everybody else’ as possible. They all want to live and experience life to the full, in spite of their current disabilities.
MDS is seen as a positive channel to help participants open up to new possibilities in life and has demonstrated the ability to help participants progress closer to independent living.
POSSIBLE IDEAS AND CONSIDERATIONS WHEN DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS
• Encourage participants to remain independent and come up with strategies to help them cope. Support parents who want to give their children strategies to become more independent.
• It appears that when participants are more high-functioning, parents don’t receive as much communication and feel they are not kept in the loop. Aim to have a consistent approach to all participants and keep communications open with families.
Participants are aspiring for an independent life which will allow them to function as close to “everybody else” as possible.
