formed without a thimble, then the standing part must be seized to the

end at the point where the whipping had earlier been applied (figure
               86.1).

Drive a spike through the standing part of the wire from the left, dividing
it with three strands to the right and three strands plus the heart (if you
have not cut this out) to the left. Make the first tuck with the strand one
(this will be the strand on the far right), through the separated strands.
Carefully withdraw the spike, but only enough for the end strand to drop
off, leaving only two strands remaining on the right. Through this space

tuck strand 2, which will have become the strand on the far right. Repeat
this last movement by withdrawing the spike a little farther, so that
another strand slips off, and there is now only one strand to the right. Pass
through the next working strand, 3. The spike must now be withdrawn
completely and re-entered, to separate the fourth strand of the standing
part, through which you tuck working strand 4 (figure 86.2). Follow this

last movement for strand 5, although the last strand, 6, has to be tucked
under the same strand of the standing part as the first strand, but in the
opposite direction. This now completes the first series of tucks and the
splice should be pulled tight, and the strands hammered more firmly into
               position.

For the next series of tucks it is easier to drive the spike in from the right.

Having driven in the spike, twist it up towards the standing part. This
