               Take a turn around this, bringing the working end of the top line up
               through the bight and lying it parallel to its standing part. Now bring the
               end of the bottom line over the top line and down between the other
               end and the neck of the bight (figure 153). Haul tight on both standing
               parts to lock the knot.


               West country whipping: a particularly good whipping when applied with
               synthetic fibre whipping twine.

               Form a thumb knot (see page 171) around the end of the rope, with the
               middle of the twine (figure 154.1). Take the twine to the back of the rope
               and tie a second thumb knot opposite the first. Return the twine to the
               front and tie a third knot immediately above the first, followed by a

               fourth at the back immediately above the second, a fifth at the front, and
               so on until you reach the end of the rope (figure 154.2). The ends of the
               twine are finished off with either a reef knot (see page 130) or a surgeon’s
               knot (see page 167).
