Appa was known as a very conscientious man, in everything he did. It had to be done right — none of the 80-20 rule. More recently, Appa came to apply this principle to ironing. When he visited Basel in July, after some trips the ironing had piled up; Appa got through the heap, all ironed to perfection.
He was not a materialistic, but did like his hats and enjoyed good whisky at every opportunity. Memorable of all would be his dancing prowess and the face offs
— whatever the music — from baila at various functions, belly dancers in Marakkech, to pop music at many weddings. We will miss that in the coming weddings.
But Sri Lanka, particularly Jaffna, was where Appa was most at peace and ease. He would brighten up at the mention of the topic and was so looking forward to returning in August
2017.
I will cherish Appa's integrity, compassion for all, selflessness, his persistence and grit, to take responsibility in doing things right, and the importance of family — not just the immediate, but as important for him was the extended family.
We will miss Appappa, Appa dearly, but his memories and values will live on with us.
