Previous page: Libya depends on imported foods, like these vegetables sold at the Benghazi Central Market.
On the right: Bazin, an unleavened bread, is a traditional national dish made with barley, water and salt, eaten with local ingredients such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggs and mutton. Each community around the country has its own special recipe.
But the situation is not without its silver lining,
a hasira, as Libyans would say. The decline of public gene- rosity offers an opportunity to rediscover sustainable, climate-resilient food production. Often by necessity, farmers are learning to save water by employing more efficient methods of irrigation, selecting crops that are better adapted to arid climates, and restoring land using nature-based solutions such as fixing dunes using desert vegetation to guard against the encroachment of sands. More cost-effective and less resource-dependent methods of growing food, including greenhouses and hydroponic farms, are starting to appear. Similarly, efforts are being made to revive fishing, using both offshore and inland aquaculture. Local communities and municipalities are reopening canning and refrigeration facilities, making it easier to keep and transport food. Although several of the large industrial farms have closed, many families continue to cultivate their own vegetable gardens, pro- viding much-needed variety to their diets.
New water-saving technologies, including hydroponics, agroponics and insect farming, could contribute to the food, feed and fertilizer supply, reducing the need for imports as the climate continues to change. With the right investments and the determination of its people, the agriculture sector can and will continue to provide a critical source of income and resilience to enhance Libya’s food security.
