Byron B. Jones
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Byron B. Jones, CPT, United States Army, Trp C, 3/17th Air Cav (WAAMCO), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 27 SEP 1971 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Jones distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as air mission commander of a command and control helicopter attempting to extract two downed aviators. Without regard for his own personal safety, Captain Jones flew his aircraft at low levels over heavily fortified enemy positions three times in order
to rescue the downed crew. Captain Jones received a large volume of hostile fire on the first attempt, was unable to see into the wreckage on the second, and on the third pass, with dedication of purpose, slowed to a hover over the crash site. At this moment, it was obvious that the two aviators on the ground had been fatally wounded. Captain Jones was surrounded by an intense barrage of enemy fire. Without hesitation,
Captain Jones calmly and with astute judgement, cleared the hostile area by the only escape route available. Although the aircraft had received a large number of hits and two personnel on board had been wounded, Captain Jones completed the necessary radio contacts and departed for the compound showing a devotion of duty which was inspirational to all. Captain Jones successfully landed the crippled aircraft and his decisive actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Clanton W. Clampitt
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to Lieutenant Clanton W. Clampitt, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over the Japanese home island of Kyushu on 4 July 1945. As a pilot of one of four photographic reconnaissance planes, he skillfully and daringly guided his plane over two flight lines, each eighty miles long, covering the entire width of the island. In spite of heavy enemy opposition, he held his course two miles from neighboring planes so that excellent coverage of enemy territory was made. The value of these photographs was great and his conduct in obtaining them was in keeping with the finest tradition of the United States Navy.
