Chairman’s Message
Bruce Huffman
“Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs
and large hearts change the course of history.” -
Mary Roach
At the very height of the greatest economic boom and lowest unemployment in our nation’s history, our country has been gripped by a terrible pandemic in COVID- 19. In a very short period of time, we have seen deep economic disruptions, illnesses that have gripped our population centers and deaths from this disease. It’s of little comfort to recognize that this is neither the first nor most severe pandemic to cross our nation’s shore. America has triumphed over Smallpox, Yellow Fever, three waves of Cholera, Scarlet Fever, Typhoid, ‘Spanish flu’, Diphtheria, Polio, Measles, and annual bouts of Influenza.
Many of our members are facing difficult personal challenges ahead; whether living through the direct effects of the illness on themselves, their loved ones or a close friend or staring at unemployment or just dealing with the wrenching anxiety caused from watching your life savings shrink during this temporary disruption to our markets.
Our brothers and sisters in uniform, from the Active, Guard, Reserve and Retired medical ranks, are doing what courageous patriotic Americans have always done and have ‘moved to the sound of the guns’. They have placed themselves at the forefront of the fight, disregarding personal risks, to augment the healthcare professionals that have been on the front lines of this battle every day.
We are blessed to live in this great nation and the leadership team of The Distinguished Flying Cross Society wishes to salute and honor those unsung heroes who will see us through this immediate crisis and give us all the opportunity to rebuild that which has been damaged. -Bruce
