ABOUT US
WHAT IS FAIR TRADE?
Fair Trade is an alliance of the traders based on Co-Operation, Dialogue, Transparency and Respect
for the Sustainable and Prosperous growth of the trading Ecosystem. It ensures better trading
conditions which in turn will secure the rights of the marginalized producers and workers. Fair Trade
not only provides better working conditions but also helps in capacity building of the producers and
transforming the unskilled work force into a skilled workforce to give them a sustainable livelihood.
The Fair Trade is based on 10 principles which are:
Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers
Transparency and Accountability
Fair Trading Practices
Payment of a Fair Price
Ensuring no Child Labour and Forced Labour
Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Women’s Economic
Empowerment, and Freedom of Association
Ensuring Good Working Conditions
Providing Capacity Building
Promoting Fair Trade
Respect for the Environment
It is a market led solution to poverty which aims to use trade, not aid, to improve livelihoods of
disadvantaged farmers and artisans to promote sustainability. With time it has evolved, bringing in
new ideas for market development, promotion and capacity building of artisans which has now
emerged to be a ambitious goal of the consortium of world’s nations under the leadership of United
Nations towards sustainable future. Fair Trade directly contributes to 8 out of the 17 SDGS that UN
and its members have adapted.
Fair trade over these has affected the lives of Millions of Artisans and Farmers. Today, the Fair
Trade Movement comprises over 4,000 grassroots organisations and their umbrella structures,
representing 2.5 million small-scale producers and workers in over 70 countries. Over 1850 fair
trade towns around the world are advocating fair trade. WFTO members alone account for a
combined income of 778 Million Euros in turnover / Income.
