The first time I met Tommy Rieman he seemed like a totally normal guy. At the time, I was serving on the Board of Directors for Veterans Bridge Home, a Charlotte-based non- profit that seeks to help Veterans transition from the military to civilian life, where he was on the staff. Although I knew he was a Veteran, I assumed that he, like a vast majority of the Veterans we saw there, probably encountered some difficulty during the transition but that any such difficulties were mild to moderate in nature and short-lived based on the services organizations like ours provided. As someone who had spent a career studying Veterans policy issues at VA, in the halls of Congress, and as an advocate representing Veterans in federal court, I had a general awareness that suicide among Veterans was a
