CHAPTER 14 - PTSD IS NOT A WEAKNESS
Eekko and Meika the German Shepherd's - Jeffrey: I served in the U.S. Army as an MP (Military Police — 95b10) from 1986 to 1989 in Manhiem, Germany (3 years) and 1990 to 1991 in Iraq (7+ months, Desert Storm/Desert Shield), Army Reserve, (Wichita, KS) from 1991 to 1992. I don't think, if I had the chance, that I would hesitate to return to Iraq if it meant that we could finish what we started. Despite my issues and injuries, I know that my service shaped who I am, turning me into a team player. I also think everyone stands to benefit from service to their country.
I injured my left knee when jumping off a 'deuce and a half' (M35A2 2 1/2-ton 6x6 Cargo Truck), and also sustained many other injuries and diagnoses from my service time. I am now 100% service-connected disabled (total and permanent). I have been diagnosed with PTSD and I went through a 90-day treatment program for PTSD in Kansas in 2002. I have also continued to attend treatment via therapy through the VA. By no means do I view PTSD as a weakness.
Lots of people were drunk and getting high in Germany. I didn't realize it would be that way. I was an MP and I was working in a jail because they were shorthanded. I worked three on, three mid's, three nights, and then three days off with one day training. I also had to do cross-training for prison guard. I don't recall a lot of my military service...or at least not the first three years.
