 CHAPTER 18 - SAINT NICHOLAS
Nicholas the Great Dane - Joshua: I served in the U.S. Marine Corps from November of 2003 through November of 2008. Within that time, I deployed to Iraq (2004-Fallujah and 2005- Ramadi) and in 2006 I was in Japan, China and the Philippines. I served in the Infantry 1st Battalion 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA and my MOS's were O311 Regular Infantryman and O341 Mortarman.
I was an adrenaline junky...and I guess I still am. I just like to deal with unusual situations where you can just get in there and be involved...making adjustments as you go along. I am a Policeman now so that kind of work ethic and drive carried over into my civilian occupation, where I have been since 2010. Now the police force is trying to get rid of me because I have MS and need the assistance of my Service Dog. They actually started trying to get rid of me before I got my Service Dog because of the MS diagnosis.
The military taught me discipline, to always on time, and to be vigilant with my surroundings. I would support a family member if they choose to join the military. Being constantly aware of my surroundings and always being a step ahead of what's going to happen has carried over to my working with my Service Dog Nicholas too since he is very aware of our surroundings when we go out. He is scanning aisles before we even get to them.
