I had Kimmy, a Pitbull/Boxer mix, for four years and she was a tremendous help. I got her from Service Dog Express in San Antonio. She was given to me at no cost. My days are much harder now without Kimmy. She knew my quirks before I knew they were going to present themselves. Her training was focused around TBI, seizures, anxiety, panic attacks, and PTSD so she was the perfect Service Dog for my needs. When I was triggered or things were bothering me she would place her paws on my chest and press down, nudge me, paw me, cuddle, lay her head and chest on my head, and she would alert me of a pending seizure and get me to safety so I could lay down and have the seizure. She was never actually taught this but she started alerting when I needed to take medications too. She spent most of her time cuddling. She was trained for TBI, PTSD, anxiety and panic attacks. She was a lot smarter than people gave her credit for.
Kimmy was put to sleep back in February of 2018. I don't know if I am going to get another Service Dog. I'm not ready just yet. I got her in 2014. She was attacked by another dog two years ago and she fought back and got the taste for blood. Unfortunately, just because they're a Service Dog, at the end of the day they are still a dog. We tried everything for two years...medication...muzzle...and she was just too iffy around other animals. Some days she would be fine and the next day she would be a raging Cujo. I talked with the Vet and he was like "it's time...she's too big of a liability; what if she goes after a child." It wasn't an easy decision. I had been trying to save her for two years.
I received a new Service Dog in training a few weeks ago. She is an American Bully. She is 14 weeks old now and her name is Ziva. She is training to alert me when I have seizures, help with my TBI symptoms, anxiety and panic attacks and PTSD. I cannot wait to see how she is after
