1968/69 The year of national student unrest

• On February 8, three students at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg are

killed by police in what will be known as the Orangeburg Massacre.
• February 20, 1968 - An Appeal for the Protection of American College Students, a

letter sent to The President of the United States, the United States Attorney General,

the State Governors, and the State and Local Police Officials written in response to
the Orangeburg Massacre by the Atlanta University Presidents.

• February 15, 1968 - Jackie Howard sent the first in a series of letters to the Spelman

community sharing her experiences in Madras, India.

• February 28, 1968, Stokely Carmichael spoke in Archer Gym to over a thousand
people.
