by Elizabeth “Beth” Willis Brown
Nineteen Sixty- five Anti-war protests Emotions abound
A parade of young women Leaders assassinated Ready to tackle the world
Pretty white dresses Civil Rights protests Fifty years have passed
Denoted the occasion A spirit of rebellion Gratefully “Golden” we are
Traditions honored Change is on the way Seasoned with wisdom
Headed to Sisters Chapel Lock-In of Spelman trustees Wives, mothers and sisterfriends
All freshmen we were Graduation comes The legacy lasts
Gathered gleefully in awe The year, nineteen sixty- nine We are the women of change
Our journey awaits A sea of black robes Standards and honor we raise
Fair Spelman in sisterhood Flesh toned stockings and black The fight undaunted
shoes
Spelmanites we are Spelman graduates
Through the arch we march
Speaking to the legacy
Sisters Chapel is aglow
Spelman Achievers
To its doors we head
Manley, Rates, Chivers expound
Alex Haley gives the charge
Four years of striving
In reverence all
Through turbulent history
Some anxious, sad, happy too
